SSE AB consumer confidence is stabilising, while SSE CDE consumer confidence is showing incipient improvements

In August, the Consumer Confidence Index for Metropolitan Lima, by IPSOS and APOYO Consultoría, stood at 43 points. Although consumer confidence remains below the optimistic level, it has registered a modest increase since the fall in May.

The percentage of families that consider that their current situation has remained the same or improved increased compared to the average for the first half of 2024, reaching its highest level so far this year (65%). Among NSE CDE households, 19% believe that their situation has improved, a percentage that has continued to increase since May. These results could be linked to the greater sensitivity of NSE CDE families to economic changes, such as the recovery of demand and the reduction of pressure on the cost of living due to the moderation of inflation.

In contrast, the perception of improvement among families of the AB socioeconomic level is greater than that of the CDE segment, but continues to deteriorate for the sixth consecutive month. In addition, the expectations of families in this group remain at levels similar to the average for 2023.

Families have not changed their perception of the ease of finding employment. In August, 18% of households believed that working conditions have improved, a percentage similar to that of recent months. Families in the AB socioeconomic level have seen a decrease in this perception: in the first half of the year, 23% considered that conditions had improved, but this figure fell to 17% in July and remained the same in August. This change could be linked to the lower dynamism of private formal employment seen until May. In contrast, among families in the NSE CDE, 18% perceived an improvement in both the first half of the year and in August.

Although the purchasing power of families shows a slow recovery after the marked decline of recent years, there is a gradual adjustment in the perception of prices. In August, 88% of households reported that prices are higher, down from 94% who believed this in 2023. In particular, the adjustment is more marked in the NSE AB, as they perceive an improvement in prices compared to the average of the previous year. However, this result contrasts with the results of the Ipsos survey, which show that this segment indicates in greater proportion that the increase in prices remains one of the main factors affecting their economy.

Finally, the percentage of families who believe that the future situation of their household will improve stood at 43%, a value very similar to that recorded in the last three months. However, in August, a gradual improvement in expectations will be observed among the lower-income socioeconomic levels, although it remains in a relatively constant range, while NSE AB households experienced a deterioration in their prospects over the last six months.

OUR PERSPECTIVE

Peru's economic growth was dynamic in Q1 2025, although international environment risks have intensified.

The economy maintained a solid growth pace in Q1 2025, around 3.8%, slightly above expectations. Primary sectors, such as agro-exports and fishing, continued to rebound, although they were still affected by weather conditions in Q1 2024.

Political pressure on the government intensifies with the censure of Santivañez and new episodes of protest.

This month, the political agenda has once again focused on citizen insecurity. The death of a singer from a well-known musical group, allegedly at the hands of extortionists, sparked renewed criticism of the Minister of the Interior, who was censured by Congress, which in turn triggered new protests.

Resumption of Congressional Functions: Oversight, Electoral Reforms, and Key Projects on the Short-Term Agenda

Despite growing criticism, President Dina Boluarte remains reluctant to remove him from office, as Santivañez plays a key role in her efforts to obstruct investigations against her and her inner circle, including her brother Nicanor Boluarte.
